I wouldn't say "way off" :D There's a ton of info about myths as major as this one; I'm sure I don't know all of it myself either.
Truth be told, I've never studied much on Merlin's origins for a long time. Could be the sources I've read from that time (books on legends, including Arthuric legends, though I don't recall the titles) never mentioned his baptism (and thus, his magic through divinity), or that I missed it entirely. Like Ramen above, I was led to assume Merlin's unnatural origins were strictly the source of his powers. Guess I way off!

Yeah, Merlin was a complicated fellow. The half-demon stuff is definitely there, but the holy prophet business is also definitely there. Here's one reference for that part: https://www.ancient.eu/Merlin/

I'll quote one of the relevant bits from the link here: "Merlin was later featured as the central character of the Merlin by Robert de Boron (12th century CE) who cast him as a Christian prophet, and this depiction, with some variation, would continue in the Vulgate Cycle (1215-1235 CE) and the Post-Vulgate Cycle (c. 1240-1250 CE) to influence Malory's final characterization of the seer." The prophecies he was connected with in that way were in part those about the Holy Grail.

Wow, I would have never guessed Merlin, considering the fact that Merlin is supposed to be a half-demon cambion that directly conflicts with the "Holy Prophet" skill. If anything, I would have guessed Galahad because of his direct role in seeking the Holy Grail, and his status as the chosen one of God in the King Arthur mythos.
